Betty’s Story at Benarty View

Moving into a care home can feel like a big step, especially when someone has lived independently in their own home for many years. Betty’s story reflects an experience that many families recognise. It also shows how the right support and environment can help someone feel safe, confident and connected to the life they enjoy.
A Difficult Decision After Living Independently
Elizabeth, known to everyone as Betty, moved into Benarty View from her family home in a nearby village. Like many people considering residential care, she felt understandably apprehensive about the move. She had several worries about what life in a care home might be like and was especially concerned about staying connected with her family and community.
Before moving, Betty had been living alone and managing as independently as possible. However, increasing mobility difficulties led to several falls at home. These experiences affected her confidence and made everyday life feel less safe. Over time, she began to spend less time outside the house, which was very different from the active lifestyle she had always enjoyed.
With growing concern from her family about her safety and wellbeing, the decision was made together that moving into a supportive care environment would help Betty feel more secure while maintaining her independence wherever possible.
Settling into Life at Benarty View
As with many people moving into a new environment, it took time for Betty to feel fully comfortable in her new surroundings. At first she was understandably reserved while getting to know the team and other residents. Building trust is an important part of settling into a care home and the team at Benarty View supported Betty at her own pace, while respecting her routines and preferences.
Over time, Betty began to feel more confident in both the environment and the people around her. As familiarity grew, so did her independence and sense of reassurance.
Regaining Confidence and Staying Connected to the Community
Now, two years into her care journey at Benarty View, Betty continues to live a full and active life that reflects her personality and interests.
Although she describes Benarty View as her sanctuary and enjoys spending time with other residents and the care team, she is rarely indoors for long. Betty regularly spends time out in the community several times each week, attending local events and enjoying visits with family.
She continues to meet her daughter and sister for lunch each week, maintaining the routines that are important to her. Music has always played a special role in her life and she still enjoys attending live performances whenever possible. It is not unusual for Betty to stay out enjoying an evening performance until late, something the team are always happy to support as part of her individual routine.
Her active lifestyle has even earned her a warm nickname within the home.
“Mrs Never In”
Known affectionately by the team as “Mrs Never In”, Betty is a true social butterfly who continues to enjoy the independence and connections that matter most to her.
Supporting residents to remain involved in their community is an important part of life at Benarty View. For Betty, this means continuing to attend events, spend time with family and enjoy music just as she always has.
Supporting Other Families Considering Care
On the occasions Betty is spending time in the home, she is known for her welcoming smile and friendly nature. She often greets visitors and enjoys speaking with families who are considering care for their own loved ones.
Many families find reassurance in hearing directly from someone who has experienced the transition into residential care themselves. Betty is always happy to share her story and talk about what life at Benarty View means to her.
Her experience reflects something many families hope for when choosing care. A safe and supportive environment can help someone remain confident, connected and involved in the life they enjoy.
